Kurtis: Hi Michael, I'd like to continue as with last time on how the Cynic appears/acts in social situations.

MICHAEL: The Cynic shows up in social situations as the person who "does not miss a thing." The Cynic sees what others do not see, and can be difficult to navigate in social situations because they naturally "throw a wrench" into the smooth social lubrication that is in place.

Depending on the overleaves of the Cynic, this person may be more open about this, or more passive-aggressive about their perspectives that challenge the presumptions of others.

In the Positive Pole, the Cynic usually sees no need to emphasize attention to what others do not see unless that attention is beneficial.

Contradiction does not have to be offensive or derailing of social structures.

Contradiction merely points out what is missed as a means to help.

However, when the Cynic goes into the Negative Pole, this emphasis on what others may have missed is rarely helpful and serves only to undermine, or Denigrate.

For example, if someone is being complimented on how beautiful she is, the Cynic may notice the spinach in her teeth. Everyone else has noticed, too, but may not say anything. The Cynic will likely say something.

This information about the spinach in her teeth is simply information, but the Cynic can turn that information into a means to help, or a means to hurt.

Pulling her aside to inform her is helpful. Stating, "well, you would probably look more beautiful without a tree in your front teeth" would not be as helpful.

It is the same information, but the Cynic must learn how to deliver that information.

Another way the Cynic can fall into the Negative Pole is if there is nothing of Contradiction to actually point out.

Instead of allowing for the fact that there may be no Contradictions or need for Contradictions, the Cynic might then begin to make up contradictions simply for the sake of being contrary, to denigrate.

This is the Attitude who can give the back-handed compliments, and the loaded statements that are cloaked in smug evasiveness like conversation bombs waiting for someone to step into.

This is one of the Attitudes who can dismiss the responsibility of communication by saying that they are simply "telling it like it is," or "just telling the truth."

When a person must qualify his or her social relationships with dismissive statements such as these, they are more often than not very clear about just how manipulative or irresponsible it is, and wrapping it in "bluntness" and "truth" seems to justify the lack of responsibility.

PeterK: I have a question about the interplay of Overleaves and this particular example is based on someone I know, but not myself. What are the typical characteristics and behaviors of a person with the following description: Third Level Mature male Artisan, Priest Essence Twin, Passion Mode, Acceptance Goal, Idealist Attitude, Moving Part of Emotional Center, and Primary Chief Feature of Impatience?

Peter, one of the important things to realize about Overleaves is that they help one to get to know a person, but they do not offer shortcuts to knowing a person. No combination of overleaves will have a "typical" way of being described because of the vast range of choice, influences of imprinting, education, culture, economic status, race, gender, etc. There is a difference between describing a home, and then describing the life that is lived in that home.

There is a difference between describing the infrastructure of an individual, and then what that person does with that infrastructure.

For instance:

The above combination could be described as a person with a great resource of energy (passion) fueled by impulses in reaction or response to inspiration or feelings (moving part/emotional), used in ways that teach the values of accepting and being accepted, and learning to be authentic in his passion to say "yes" (acceptance), while always comparing people and experiences in ways that comply to ideals of improvement

(idealism), all while trying to nurture fulfilling ways to create and bring form to ideas in this world (Artisan), and aiming to bring that creativity out and into the world to share instead of keeping it to himself or to only those close to him (3rd Level aiming for 4th Level), while sometimes feeling all of this is a race against time (impatience).

This is as stripped of individuality as we can get for a "typical" description, but this combination as it would be described specific to a specific person could get greatly elaborated and nuanced as we accommodated the variables.

 

 

ViP: The phenomenon known as 'technological singularity' refers to the (theoretical) point in the evolution of a sentient, organic species when its technology has developed sufficiently to allow the individual consciousnesses of its members to be transferred to host bodies built off that species' technology. (For purposes of longevity, increased mental capacity, freedom from disease, and so on.)

While this phenomenon is still fictional to us, a number of people take the possibility of it happening very seriously and consider it inevitable.

Is such a phenomenon actually possible, and if so, could you describe the ways in which a species actually does or did benefit from making this change? And, would sentiences tend to become increasingly or decreasingly benevolent/considerate toward other species as a result of doing this?

It is entirely possible and has been a viable shift for a few variations of Sentience. In almost every case, this scenario was triggered by a known threat to the species, usually of a biological nature to an extent that requires the emphasis if survival is to be ensured.

Because the shift away from dependency on biology for the sustaining of life, the Sentience has one of two solutions in place that help the evolutionary process: one is those bodies are shared by many Essences over time, and each "incarnation" is a reprogramming of the genetic software to accommodate the new Essences. Essences tend to then incarnate in waves that change out entire clusters very close together.

So rather than aging and dying, the bodies power down and reboot.

The other way this lack of dependency on limited time in a body is accommodated is through willing disassembly. Rather than "dying," most will know when they are done, and turn the bodies in for upgrades, parts, recycling, variations, etc.

Again, the power is reduced or halted and then reprogramming and rebooting is what allows the next Essence to move in.

Procreation is still possible, but only by those who learn how to build machines. In other words, you can combine creativity and knowledge to create your "children." Most that we know of opt to simply place their orders through collective resources.

Because of the dynamic that tends to be in place to move Sentience in this direction, the interest in aggression and war tend to wane drastically, but there can be issues if access to maintenance and resources for repairs are sparse.

There is usually a transition period that can last quite some time, and this transition has always been helped through companionship with biological creatures, or companion animals.

The transition must be met with some infusion of responsibility and nurturing of life.

The benefits are quickly learned, but is vital.

We could continue to elaborate upon this in further exchanges. We will take a final question now.
