Arrival

I highly recommend the movie Arrival.  It is about extraterrestrials who come to several countries on earth and make it clear they are open to communication.  In the US, the government sends a linguist and a mathematician to figure out how to communicate with them.  Turns out that the extraterrestrials have a very different sense of time than we do and their mode of communication reflects it.  They also look quite different from other presentations of extraterrestrials in movies.  Their different concept of time, to me, reflects a more Michael sense of time (i.e., non-linear).  There is so much to unpack each time I watch it.  Not only is it a fascinating movie, it is quite moving.  I have seen it a few times now and am moved each time.

I watched that movie on a plane, and it moved me so deeply. Everything about it. I was shocked that such an old soul movie was made for wide release in this day & age. The non-linearity of time is a thing I think about still, from that film, and the compassion of the beings. The death of the child is of course a resonant part of this film for me, and the non-linear relationship to time speaks to the nature of that kind of grief in a way I recognize. I also love the understated acting and the score.
