Hate mail

Working for a feminist and an LGBTQ nonprofit means every so often you get hate mail from people who think who you are is wrong. Women are wrong. LGBTQ people are wrong. Today in the mail two hate letters came through from christians who insist homosexuality is a sin and we should all repent or we are all going to hell and oh irony of ironies, they want us to be saved. I'm not christian so it doesn't really mean anything to me and I usually just throw it away and forget about it but world pride was just last week and there were many celebrations of joy and affirmation and it kinda killed my spirit a little bit today to have to see those hate letters in the mail. Then I listened to a podcast about this piece some fat hating journalist wrote for the Telegraph about how horrible she thinks it is for Nike to display size 18 mannequins wearing active wear in their stores because while she thinks fat people should lose weight none of us should be seen in public doing it because our mere existence promotes obesity. Like anyone ever says hey there's a fat person, so I guess I can eat all the cake now. It's laughable and ridiculous and also tiring. Just pure hate. And my fb and insta feeds are still full of takedown posts about the new black actress who will be playing Ariel in the live action version of the Little Mermaid. Sooo many white people think that a make believe mythological character can only be white and they are so angry about it that they have tried to boycott the actress for some reason. And they started a notmyariel hashtag. I saw one post that was about some rando who started a gofundme for some reason to try to get Disney from making the movie. I'm just baffled by that one. It's all pure hate. All these things happened today. I'm feeling like I reached my limit of hate filled crazy today and I'd like to go in the corner and cry it out for a hot second. Usually the haterade is poured a cup here a cup there, but all in one day is too much. If anybody knows how to create a pocket dimension of hot springs and massages and all the frozen margaritas you can drink let me know. I could use a break from reality for a good week. 🙃

You're one of my heroes because you're out there doing the work publicly and actively and thus taking the heat for it. I appreciate all you do and hope that I can be as brave and maybe at least half as effective in the situations that I find to step up to provide a voice against the haters.

I was raised in a Protestant church that I guess was fairly liberal because I'm still astonished by those claiming to be Christian who hold such repulsive "values." Frankly, I'd rather end up in hell than share heaven with them.

@Janet thanks for that. ❤️ It made me tear up in a good way. When you see something i’m Sure you will be able to say something.

I did spend pend the evening dancing with a room full of fat women who said they were really happy there was a space for them to move their bodies joyfully and without judgement. It was my first time there and even tho dance is not my preferred form of exercise their joy was infectious and I had a good time. The instructor ended the class with a soul train catwalk. Everyone got to strut their stuff. It was great. So that and your kind words lifted my spirits. 🙏🏽🙂

I was raised without religion. My father is one of the greatest critics of the religion I know.

He was raised in a Catholic family and when he turned 18 he turned away from religion.

My father always told me that there is a lot of hypocrisy within the religion. That many times, the interpretation of the bible takes place according to convenience.

At present it seems that the number of protesters in Brazil has increased. I think that in a while the number of Protestants will be greater than that of the Catholics.

The theology of prostericity has greatly increased here. And I do not like to generalize .. but what I observe is that it is often these people., More involved in this most prejudiced prosperity theology ..

And I've seen lots of facebook posts, including co-workers talking things like.

"For a gay man not to be sad if the world does not accept you, God does not accept you either" Or "hell, the fate of all homosexuals."

It bothers me  reading these things and I'm not even gay. For these things I am sometimes grateful to be raised without religion ..

I am grateful that you care and that you provide a haven for those that you care about. What the haters hate most, is our power as a collective, and they know that we exist, they just don't realise that we exist in numbers that collectively would frighten them back under their rocks, if we could address each one of these haters as they "took on the world". They take aim at people who are frontline, transparent and who are strong representatives of humanity. I am sorry that these hideous people hurt you today, and I want you to know that you are loved and appreciated for your intentions and your actions. Your steps allow the rest of us to follow safely, and your light makes the dark path brighter and more beautiful.

Sorry to hear of your experience... Annoying when some people are so insecure in their identities they lash out like that and it spills into your good work. ”Haterade” is a cool word, though! I’m adopting the hashtag notmyhate(rade).

People use religion to justify all sorts of evil things.  So they think you're going to hell... why do they care?  They're not?  Their imaginary Deity wants a city smitten.  Ok, so why do they have to do it?  Why doesn't someone just say "go do it yourself you lazy ass omnipotent mother fucker?"

Recently, I had stopped by our local library branch to print out the last little bit of The Mueller Report.  On this day, there was something going on that I wasn't totally sure of at this point.  There was some sort of protest being set up outside the entrance to the library.  On one side there were these Christian purists objecting to the recruiting of children by gays supposedly and on the other side of the line were drag queens protesting the protesters.  Inside the library, there was some dude sitting in the children's section of the library reading OUT LOUD (in a library) scriptures about not violating children.  I happened to notice one of the library staff getting security and/or a police offer ready to escort him outside.  I finished what I was there to do and stopped just briefly on my way back outside and took note of what was happening.

The anti-recruiting children sign of the Christian purists I just found sadly amusing.  While standing on the drag queen side of the line, I looked at this couple stand near me sensing that they probably felt the same way that I did about all of this ridiculousness and said to them "Recruiting children?   What they need to do is stop having gay babies!"  We both chuckled about the truth of that statement.  I didn't hang around long and when I decided to go ahead and take off, I walked up to the one of the drag queens still busy making up her protest sign and put my arm around her shoulder and said "thank you for doing what you do."  I'm sure she probably thought she was about to be accosted but was relieved to see I was just someone who sympathized with her cause.

Thanks everybody for the kind words!! ❤️❤️ I love that you all see how silly these haters are. @petra there actually was a thin woman there. I was kind of confused by her presence there and was like What the heck? But then I thought you know, I'm not gonna go there. She could be someone's friend or maybe she used to be fat or maybe she just loves the friendly and welcoming vibe of the class. She's not hating on anyone so leave her be. She was having a good time like the rest of us. So yes, there would have been room for you. 🙂

@Bobby, christianity has so many contradictions. It makes no sense. Forgetting about reason in exchange for blind faith just doesn't answer questions or resolve contradictions. I don't understand why people take comfort in that confusion. @Luciana Flora, I agree with your father. How the bible verses get interpreted does depend on convenience for most people. Follow it today, ignore it tomorrow. Another thing about this religion that I don't like. I only had to go to church as a kid when I visited my relatives. The only parts I liked were the songs. The music was always great. The rest - not so much.

Yeah, that God character should read Jung or find some other way to become a bit more independent and act like a responsible adult for a change...
