The Launch, by James Horner

From the soundtrack of Apollo 13, James Horner has captured something beautiful in this piece of music. For those of you unfamiliar with Apollo 13, it is the story of three American astronauts launched into space as part of the Apollo 13 mission. These astronauts were supposed to land on the moon, but are prevented from doing so when a mechanical failure results in the spacecraft being crippled by an explosion. While the three astronauts fight for their lives in space, the NASA team on Earth scrambles to figure out a way to bring the astronauts back home.

This piece of music is called The Launch, and it aptly plays towards the beginning of the movie, when Apollo 13 first launches into space.

A cynic can easily dismiss the magic and wonder of the Space Race by pointing out the fact that it had nothing to do with the human spirit and everything to do with getting to space, and then the moon, BEFORE those goddamn commie Soviets. I agree with this, but only to a certain extent. A cynic can also say that the act of taking a breath is just putting death on hold, which is also true, but so much is left out of the picture if no effort is taken to see the vast potential offered by the Gift of each new breath. Sure, the Space Race was a direct product of the fear-based unhealthy rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, but it is also true that the act of leaving the planet and reaching for the stars left an indelible mark on Humanity's grand collective Story.

Humanity reached for the stars, long before we were 'supposed' to. Why? Because we could, so we did. It is so simple, and beautiful, and that is what James Horner manages to elegantly capture in this piece of music.

",but so much is left out of the picture if no effort is taken to see the vast potential offered by the Gift of each new breath".

I like the music, but even more so what "You" wrote!~!

Bobby

And with less technology than we have in a handheld smart phone no less.  All of the attempts and successes were truly amazing feats.
