I have never read the series and I might never🤣

But I love the concept of the God Emperor of mankind... He is the combined reincarnation of every Shaman in the world that at the time and is an immensely powerful entity. Born in 8000BCE he has been guiding the development of humanity in many different ways and under different guises of the the 30 Millenia (a leader, messiah, scientist). When he saw that humanity was going off the rails he took a more "Direct" approach 🤣 Who wakes up one morning and decide its a good day to claim Dominion over humanity? Clearly this guy🤣 His physical form is non responsive and he sits on some ancient golden throne that channels his consciousness from this place called the immaterium, and since he is immortal he's gonna be emperor for a while 🤣1000 psykers (Psychics) die daily to feed the emperor (the throne?) the energy it needs to keep running. Its also said that he doesnt lve any man, or men, but that he loves mankind, and he doesn't have the capacity for compassion.

Warhammer 40K is bigger than a book series. It started as a tabletop battle game and expanded into an entire universe of lore. It is a very messed up universe which makes the Star Wars universe look like daycare. That said, many books have been written which take place within the Warhammer 40k Universe.

The God Emperor isn't doing too well. Nowadays, he looks a little something like this:

image.png

The Emperor got into a huge fight with his eldest son Horus, and they killed each other, but before the Emperor's body died, it was hooked into the Golden Throne (pictured above).

The Emperor's throne keeps his consciousness alive. It allows him to keep the Imperium together, and his consciousness serves as a sort of bright beacon for Human navigators plotting courses through the demon-filled dimension of faster-than-light travel. If the Emperor died, the beacon of his consciousness would be snuffed out, and it would be like having all compasses suddenly losing the ability to measure true north. Faster-than-light travel would no longer be possible, and the countless planets of the Imperium would suddenly be isolated from each other. The Throne's portal into the faster-than-light Webway is also being held closed by the Emperor's will, and if he were to die, hordes of demons would burst through and destroy Holy Terra (Earth).

So the Emperor needs to be kept alive, or Humanity is completely screwed. The problem is the Throne was built during the 'Dark Age of Technology'. Humanity's greatest era of technological advancement has already come and gone. By 'present day' in the 40K Universe, the Imperium is in a situation of using hyper-advanced technology which they do not have the means to replicate or fully repair. It would be like a medieval person gawking at ancient Roman aquaducts: they would know what the aquaducts were for and could still use them if they worked, but don't ever ask that medieval person to build aquaducts of their own.

Because Humanity no longer has the technology to repair, replicate, or upgrade the Throne, defective and corrupted psychics are sacrificed every day to keep the Throne powered and the Emperor alive. All worlds in the Imperium keep close track of psychics within their populations, because psychics in this universe have a tendency to go insane and commit mass murder if they are not trained properly.

Only if you are an Imperial Inquisitor, and if you ARE an Imperial Inquisitor, legally speaking, you have to tell me.
