PRIEST Maureen 22,483 Posted November 5, 2020 PRIEST Report Share Posted November 5, 2020 48 minutes ago, Marigold said: One thing that's really bizzare to me is how can some people who claim to have been lifelong Democrats become Trump supporters. I've read many stories like these and have observed people sharing online how they had friends who used to be ''hardcore liberals'' but in a few years slowly transformed into Trumpists. I've read stories of children who were raised by Labour-supporting parents in the UK that later switched to the conservatives and the pro-Brexit rhetoric. Like, how does that happen? Surely in order for those people to have been liberals or leftists, especially those who held such positions for a huge part of their lifetimes, must have had secure and strong ethical positions at least on key issues that would have prevented them from supporting authoritarians should such individuals appear or try to gain power. But apparently no. Reminds me of some of those ex-vegans who seemed like they were really passionate about animals but after quitting veganism went full carnist and hunting. Now, I know that most of the people supporting Trump and others like him were conservatives to begin with, I'm just perplexed by the (I hope, minority) that weren't. This brings forth the question-if these people could turn from one person to another so easily, did they REALLY had strong ethical foundations to begin with? Media brainwashing is a huge thing (tell me about it-I live in a country that holds the 111th place in the world for media freedom and I constantly see the effects of it on the people around me) but I can't see it as being an excuse to turn back on one's former positions that easily. This issue looks complicated though and I still can't find one satisfactory answer particularly for those who were liberal/left-wing (I don't view these as the same thing, by the way, even though I'm aware they are often used interchangeably) for a longer time. This whole thing feels like a psychological horror story. I'm calling it ''Ethical Alzheimer's'' or ''Moral Dementia''. ''A sickness that causes people to turn on their previous values and support neo-fascists. Coming soon to your country on election season.'' In other cases, people's regression of ethical positions makes more sense. In particular, cases when people do not pull off an obvious 180° but instead fail to keep up with the times and the new movements. They become conservatives simply by not moving forward instead of by contradicting their past positions. A good example would be those who may accept gay people and continue to do that but don't extend that towards accepting trans people. It becomes ''simply too much for them''. From a more broad point of view, it could be argued that if they can't keep up with modern, ever-changing values, then they didn't have such strong core liberal views to begin either. To me having a certain core value (let's say that value is human rights) is not just about being in favour of this or that concrete issue, but something more abstract that includes being able to support or defend all that is associated with said value, whether it's a mainstream issue and being actively discussed or more fringe. It allows you to keep an open mind and constantly seek to educate and better yourself (haha, I'm speaking like the Idealist that I am here). Just a quick note (I'm on my way out)... remember we all have imprinting from families, the cultures we live in and access online, places we work, religious affiliations, etc. These will shift and change as we get older, as we move through our Internal Monads. My other sister (not Diane) is quite religious (Mormon) and actually wrote a conservative viewpoint on one of my posts on FB speaking out against abortion, etc. I told her we have to agree to disagree. She's always been religious, in some way or another (the Mormons came to her door years ago), but used to be more liberal in her views. I've commented to Diane how she's gotten worse and worse over the last few months. 10

You know. A situation like the one back in 2016. If ever there had been a time to vote against what their states did and instead cast their lot in with the popular vote, it was then. The Electoral College is a relic of the Slave State and needs to fucking die. I feel a strange sense of calm, too, @Evelin. Since yesterday, I've had a tenuous but persistent gut feeling of calm, and of something "getting on track". I also have a weird sense of a collective commitment, of a big Us. That all the protests of the past four years, all the suffering, all the organizing, is having an effect. It's not that anything huge has changed yet. It's more like...I have a sense of a lot of us committing to making things better. Like, a feeling that a lot of us have our focus on that. I'm also refreshing the election tracker constantly, and really annoyed at being kept in suspense, and deeply sad and tired. Also, wow, a lot of Americans are fascists. 14

Connor 7,361
I was in the process of starting a tour when the news of Biden's victory arrived, and I was informed by the folks taking the tour. Old City Philly erupted in celebration, and my tour went a bit off the rails. Everyone was cheering, screaming, and honking their horns. Strangers celebrated with each other. A large crowd was gathering by Independence Hall for a "Keep Counting" protest around 3pm, and since the news arrived before that, it seems the group became something more akin to a huge celebration while still acknowledging the fight is not over. Politically speaking, we are at war, and today does not change that. Thankfully, my tour group consisted of liberals from New Jersey, and we had a good time together. It would have been quite awkward if they were conservatives. 21

Popular Post Becca the Student 3,174
I have to say, watching the speeches tonight... with the emphasis on recognizing Kamala's historic firsts as a VP-elect, and Biden explicitly thanking the black and Native American communities (among others) for their huge role in his win and including "rooting out systemic racism" as part of his mandate... it make me a little teary. It's such a huge change from the last four years. This afternoon, my city was celebrating out in the streets. Everyone was dancing to music, cheering, playing instruments, banging drums and pots and pans. Every car that passed by honked their horn, the driver raised their hands or their fist in celebration. People leaned out their windows to cheer. Seeing people wave American flags in particular, in reclamation of the symbol of what it stood for, soothed something in me. The overwhelming feeling on the streets was that of relief. Someone told me it felt like a weight had been lifted off of their chest. I feel the same -- like I've been rounding my shoulders to support the pressure, and suddenly that pressure has lifted, and the air feels tingly and light. We don't know what kind of struggle we may be up against regarding the transfer of power -- or what it looks like on the other side of whatever triggers the Divergence on the 12th -- but I'm so, so grateful for the relief we got today. Jeroen 12,162
I watched some of the celebrations from cities across the world in support of the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and it all felt very uplifting to me. The same goes for the speeches of Kamala and Joe this evening which had an all inclusive theme to it and was uplifting too. Although there is quite a bit of work to be done relating to issues of systemic racism, the pandemic, climate change, and in other areas as well, this evening I feel like together we have moved onto or will move onto a trajectory leading not only the people of the United States but people across the world towards greater unity, healing, and recovery. In relation to the celebrations, I would have loved to have been physically present at one of the larger celebrations seen at some of the cities across the world. My home town has been fairly quiet today as a snow storm rolled in. Edited November 8, 2020 by Jeroen
petra 10,430
There is quite some relief now for all of us, and the world ,that the kindergarten crew has to leave, and with that, that some sense will come back to address issues that are essential to sustain Life on this Planet for all that share it, and that America has a good look on the damage done to the world at large through their politics. The elected people who want to take this on, I wish them well on their way. Joe Biden represents for me the old american bs, that he was raised by and part of, it will die out over the next decades, the one thing that I am grateful for is, that he played the perseverance puppet when some decided it was needed, and it obviously worked. The intentions of the King Lady Kamala Harris are to fresh on the plate, I wish she is able under all of the pressure to sustain to live in her positive Poles more often than not. Looks like Kamala could be, and maybe is the real President of the US, but that would have been "to Much" so as in the old days, there is this puppet ruler and the Lady....... anyhow I am glad she is willing to give it all, we are all better of with her than the kindergarten crew. But given Joe's age, there is a strong chance that he will not make it through his first term, or, if re-elected, his second; or he may find the duties of the Presidency, so long ignored by Trump, to be too much as he ages, and resign in Kamala's favor. I do think she will follow Biden as President, and be the first woman President of the US. Is she the best person for the job? Maybe, maybe not. But she is such an improvement over what we have now that I can only be grateful to my fellow Americans for voting Biden/Harris! Also, I'm looking forward to Trump being evicted by the Secret Service and/or the US Marshals on January 20. I hope it's televised. I will be glued to the set.

She will hopefully as you say be a positive pole King, who hopefully gets to lead and whisper or speak loudly in Biden's ear, and hopefully she listens to Barack Obama too. I won't judge Biden yet, but out of Harris and Biden, Harris is the one I am watching, cheering and supporting openly. I support Biden and he is so much better than the Ex President but I dunno. I guess I don't expect much from Biden. Very early days. I let them define themselves on their own terms and criteria.
Becca the Student 3,174
Kamala has the most consistent and reliably progressive voting record in the Senate, so I have a feeling she’ll influence Biden to push at least a little more progressively than he usually pushes. I’m intrigued to see what kind of Pres Biden will be. I know what he represents as a symbol at the moment (decency, empathy, healing), but I’m curious to see how that energy will actually manifest in his governing. He’s a throwback to a time when “compromise” meant “modest progress,” but he’s facing a Republican Party that seems fully ready to obstruct and say no to everything in the same way they did when he and Obama were in the White House. I get the sense he has a similar view on governing that Obama has, but he’s also been in the White House with a stubborn Congress. We need immediate action on climate change. I don’t expect anyone to be able to force legislation on that through a McConnell-run Senate, so I’m interested to see how this goes, and crossing fingers for Georgia (and North Carolina? Perhaps that’s part of the Divergence?).
Wendy 4,075
@MaureenVan Jones got my tears flowing too. I had to work and didn't see any local celebrations but a neighbor of mine said he was out to breakfast when Biden won PA, and he said all the phones were blowing up and everyone started cheering and waiters were dancing in the aisles. Here in Florida I have not seen a single Trump bumper sticker or flag since since the call. Checking the news, it looks like there were a number of celebrations in the streets of the cities here. It feels amazing to wake up and not worry about the election any more!

PRIEST Maureen 22,483 Posted November 11, 2020 PRIEST Report Share Posted November 11, 2020 I had this dream (another part followed but it's not about Trump or the White House so I won't include it) the day after the election and I didn't tell anyone about until I knew for sure that Joe Biden had won as I was worried that it was saying that Trump had won and I didn't want to jinx anything. Now that I look at it I'm wondering if it shows just how compromised Trump is, and will continue to be, with his newest assault on the Intelligence Community. People are worried that Trump will sell American secrets to pay down his debts. Trump has been transacting with Putin/Russia for many years so why would he stop now when he needs them more than ever. November 4, 2020: I was at the White House for Trump’s Party after the election. I was with another young woman (I was younger). Actually, it was slightly pre-party and we were walking around with Trump. My friend sat down beside him on a sofa. I was behind. He started to lie about something he was talking to her about. I went behind him and called him out on it then I went beside him and sat down. I asked him why he lied all the time. I wasn't just being kind I really wanted to know. I wanted him to know. He told me he didn’t lie. He said he just compared things that were the same like Coke and Pepsi. I said but they’re not the same. I then got up and knelt down beside him and took his right hand, held it, and said, seriously, why do you lie? He looked befuddled like a child who’s been caught but truly doesn’t know why he lies. He just does. He seems so childlike. Broken. The White House is starting to fill up with guests. We walk around and notice Russians are the main guests. In the main party room they have taken over and are singing Russian folk songs of celebration. There are Russians in uniform, one in particular in black with some red and gold trim, that I keep my eyes on. I pass by him a few times, on the stairs and in rooms, as we mill about. He knows I see him for who he is and who the rest of them are, interlopers. They remind me of the Nazi from Germany. He also knows my strong dislike. He knows. For some reason this is enough for me, at the time. He knows that I know that I haven’t fallen for the bullshit – for Trump’s or their bullshit. I know they don’t belong. I don’t accept them. Many, who aren’t there don’t accept them. But they are there. That’s that. My friend and I leave. 7 2
